With their distinctive long beards and their pronounced cheek sacks male orangutans are impressive figures. Also characteristic are their massive throat pouches which enable them to make the so-called "long call". By means of this impressive call with which they mark their territory several times a day, they can make their presence felt over a distance of up to 1 km.
